Napa gold for this guy used to use fram filters in my big block pickups...but times change and stuff gets cheaper...nuff said.
Never had a problem with em in all the years that we used them. And where it stated "which filters to avoid"...the tough guard wasn't listed.
Because I've NEVER had a problem with them. We've used em on everything. From our old 87 Mazda, to the 92 Dakota, to the 99 Sable, to our 97 Dakota, and my Ranger. No problems at all.
Okay, I read more of it. Most of what I read, nobody's had problems with them and are only backing away from them because of what they're hearing. Not because of what they witnessed.
Fram tough guard the (X6) I've used them on all my vehicles for the past 6 years all changed at 4,000-5,000 Kms and never had any issue. Oil always gold-brownish even after all the mileage (odd time it was more black, but it wasnt likely).
It's not that im "following the crowd" I just dont think cardboard belongs in ANY part of the vehicle, ESPECIALLY in the oil passage ways. F that.
The filters don't fail, the end caps get saturated with oil. (what happens to carboard when it gets wet?) The end caps get super saturated with oil, and start to deteriorate. When this happens, you have NO FILTRATION!!! the oil is not being filtered. The only difference in the fram tough guard is that the casing is thicker. Thats it. Oil color is not the issue with these filters. You have a brand new truck, I sure hope you are not running fram filters. :furious:
I was running Fram oil filters on my 1992 Honda Accord with over 200,000 Miles and the oil was still golden at every oil change meaning that the filter did its job. The way I see it is I change my oil twice more often then typical people so My oil still does a better job then people who change their oil at 4,000-8,000 Mile Intervals.
Why would Fram risk their reputation by putting out a shoddy designed filter? I've used them all the time too and never had an engine fail. Why don't the other guys put the "grip" on like Fram does? :confused1:
This Because in todays world, its easier to switch to a cheaper building material to save a few pennies and maximise profits than actually build it right for a little bit more. Maybe if you change your oil religiously every 3k miles they may be fine, but there's a possibility that any longer than that they may deteriorate. The grip is really unnecessary, because?e its not like your torquing it down to 50 ft lbs, it only goes hand tight, so I know when my hand starts slipping because its tight up against the block, it doesn't need to go any tighter
I don't put them on any tighter than it says, 3/4 of a turn after contacting the surface. Maybe a smidge more if it feels to loose.
