Hello,

Im hoping someone on here can help me. My dad owns a 2003 edge ranger. He says that it isnt getting the gs mileage that it probaly should be. Itis running 60-65 mph and running 2900 rpms. He would like to swap the rear end gears to maybe improve this. The rear end is an 8.8 and i believe they 330 gears. If you know what vehicle would be best or another solution he would be very appreciative.

thank you.

I think he has lower gears than 330s. Automatic or manual? What engine? My 2001 Edge is a 3.0L automatic with 410 gears. These are stock that came with the truck from the factory. Also I think Rangers only come with either 410 or 373 rear gears from the factory. With the low gears I am running about 2400rpm at 65mph. I had an older 94 ranger with a stick and the same engine but had a 373 gear ration and it ran slightly higher rpm at the same speed. There are gas saving mods that can help some, but a good place to start would likely be a tune up and make sure all the emission sensors are up to date. Their effectiveness fades over time and can cost you more at the pump.

I run about 25-2700 at 60, and I have the 4.11:1 gears. What mileage does he get? I get roughly 20 with an AEM cold air intake and cutoff exhaust.

i have a 2011 with the 2.3ltr dual cam i4 has the 5 speed automatic trans mission with over drive. with a 410 ratio. i cruise on the highway at around 2300rpm, at 65mph, once you settle in at a consitant speed the overdrive kicks in and drops the rpm a little more. i average around 27mpg.
give it a tune up youll see a difference.

Knowing he's got an Edge, it either has the 3.0L or 4.0L engine. Knowing the year, we know it either has 3.55, 3.73, or 4.10 gearing as well. If it has a 4.0, his rpm's on the highway is very normal. The 4.0 SOHC LOVES rpm's. I see very good real-time numbers revving at 3200 going 75 mph or so. Something to keep in mind, these truck's aren't very economical. Roughly 16mpg combined if we're lucky. Almost 20 on the highway.

Has he checked the usual things? Like tire pressures, air filter, general maintenance?? How long has he had the truck? Did he notice a drop in mileage? Or did he just recently start checking his mileage? What size tires?

As said before, help us help you! Welcome to the site.

AAAAAAAAAAND look at that. Someone logged in, posted a question, and never came back. Say hello to the most comprehensive post going to no one! Gotta love 3 year old thread bumps and me not noticing.
