So the granddaughter is in Driver Ed and we have been taking out in the car to practice. Well yesterday I took her out in the truck. We think she needs to learn to drive a stick shift also. Well let's say it didn't go as well as I thought it would. Between bucking and killing it and forgetting the clutch she did ok once she got rolling. Then I tell her as she lets the clutch out to give it more gas. She peels out, eyes as big as half dollars, I say 2nd gear, she let off the gas and pulled out of 1st---no clutch, I grabbed her hand before she could try to force it into 2nd!!! Ok, let's try again. She did ok a few times but we have a lot of work to do. Any tips?
 
Let her learn to shift with the vehicle off. Get her in the drivers seat with the e-brake on and you in the passenger seat and Get her to "shift into gears" and get the hang of working the pedals flawlessly. THEN let her try and drive the truck.
 
When teaching her on hills do what my dad did with me set the ebrak put in gear and slowly let out of clutch while giving a little gas then pull ebrake off and your a rolling... Hopefully forward lol
 
I have taught a few of my friends how to drive stick and one of the first things I do is get them actlimated with the gear box so they dont try to shift and go into the wrong gear. Then I have them work the clutch and the gearshift so they get you have to use the clutch. Next, I get them rolling by having them put the truck in gear and let of the clutch at a snails pace to find that spot where the truck starts to roll. I make them do that 3 or 4 times and then I let them put some gas pedal in it. Seems to have worked thus far, only had one person not get it, but she was, as much as I hate to say it, dumb as a doornob. Usually works, just a thought
 
when i wanted to learn, i bought a beater truck and drove it around on the back roads, never registered or inspected it, because my town doesnt have a cop or anything driving the streets so it helped out alot learning with a a truck that i knew was ok to mess up on and not care
 
something a buddie told me to do to practice taking off on a hill, take a beer (soda) can, and put it behind the rear tire. if you can take off without rolling back over the can, you pass. if you crush the can or stall, try again.
