2009 ranger shifter ball

I'm trying to replace the stock gear map shifter ball with something a little more esthetically pleasing that I found at Canadian Tire.

I've been searching around for a way to remove the shifter ball in the new rangers... most people say that it should just slide out. I tried putting a piece of wood right under the ball and hitting it upwards, but that didn't work... seems like it's on there pretty tight.

There's a little metal ring just beneath the shifter ball... is that part of the ball or the shaft?

If anyone has any tricks for getting that ball off, it'd be appreciated.

Probably too late for this thread but I want to change shifter knob for a 2003 Manual. I wonder if anyone ever came up with something on this?
Meanwhile I'll keep looking through other threads to see if I can find anything somewhere else.

On my 99 I used vise grips to twist and pull. It was glued on. This will most likely dent or crack you old knob but if your putting on a new one then it shouldn't matter.

Thanks for the reply. I thought about twisting hard but was afraid of screwing up the linkage. Guess I could grip the shaft with vice grips while twisting on the knob to back up and prevent twist from going down to linkage. That would mar the shaft but could clean that up and repaint maybe. I just hate to force things, think I'll stay with the stock knob for now.

If I remember correctly, I had a 93 standard and the knob and shaft were splined so its similar to removing a steering wheel
