Sounds like my '93 splash when I got it. Bad ground at ecm relay was my problem. There do you have a loose 2 pin round connector coming off the negative battery cable? That should be plugged into something underneath the fuse box in the engine bay.

Heater core? Freeze plug on back on engine? Kind of hard to tell without seeing the truck myself. Get yourself a bright flashlight and a mechanic's mirror and check behind the block. I'm not certain on 3.0l engines of there would be any freeze plugs on the block in the bellhousing or not.

Check that your ecm relay is grounding. Had the same problem on my '93 4.0l. Being a '96 you should have obd2, I think. Check for codes, one may be present that hasn't set the light. If you've got a tool fancy enough, check for crank and cam signals.
