I have a 98 ranger XLT 4x4. I don't have any fog lights from the factory and was interested in putting them in. I purchased the lower air dam from ebay and got some lights from another place. the lights have the connector on the back. But since I am adding them in and can't just plug them in...how should I wire them?

here is the valance that I bought http://www.ebay.com/itm/370722236772?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
I would go to the JY and get a couple of plugs to fit the bulbs. Then I would PM Buggman for 1 of his wire harness and switch. Can't go wrong there.
+1 on the JY for the bulb connectors. If you can't find them there, check on evilBay for the bulb # you have for something called wiring extensions. Basically a short piece of wiring between 2 connectors, one end plugs into your bulb, the other end you can cut off & splice into the wiring for a relay (either for a standard toggle switch or when using one of my wiring kit conversions). My wiring kits allow you to use an oem for switch for oem or aftermarket lights & I bypass all the factory wiring so you don't have to deal with figuring out the wiring. If you don't care for the oem look in the radio bezel, you can use a thin flush mount toggle switch & a relay under the hood to control the lights. I like the look of the stock switches... if you didn't already know....
thanks everybody for your response! when I get to these lights i will figure out what i'm going to do!
Fog lights I did the same thing to my 2000 which did not have anything, bought the valance like you did and also the lights from eBay. Got the extensions Buggman referred to and his wiring kit along with a bezel for fog switch and used one of his modded switches. Came out sweet people cannot believe is isn't factory. I use my fog lights all the time best mod I could have done. Good luck with it.
If you are going to use an OEM Switch, you need a buggman harness, another radio bezel with switch opening, an OEM Switch and either an OEM or the light manufacturer's harness or wire/relay to do the job. If you intend to wire up the lights using an after market switch/relay setup then look at this write-up: http://www.rangerforum.net/f36/how-aux-light-hookup-indicator-light-4454/ If you wire it yourself by buying the pieces get everything for the proper current flow and use a relay. If you want the lights to come on with the head light, both beams, it was suggested on this site to use the parking light wire to replace the sw but the indicator light can still be added in.
Sounds Sweet!! I got the valance on yesterday and am waiting for the lights to show up now! Where did you get your extensions from? Thanks!
Fog lights Another site on eBay and they were not very expensive, you just have to know the bulb size. They were headlight wiring extensions plugs on both ends plugged one into fog light sockets and cut off other plug and hard wired lights into them. If you need more details either post here or PM me.
it's going good so far! My lights are supposed to be here today! I'm just gonna start from scratch and wire it!
Something to thing about… When wiring the switch, think aobut what you want the lights to do, other than light up the road. Do you want them on all the time, maybe just with the headlights and do you want an option of turning them on without the headlights. I have found that I use the Fogs with the Headlights and the Parking Lights. I never have run them by themselves but they could be hooked up at DRL (Daytime Running Lights). I like the idea of hooking up the Relay (pin 85) to the Parking Light wire, this would turn them on for all front lighting use, with parking lights and headlight. You should consider a switch to turn them off of needed, just in case someone complains. Good Luck and post some pictures and how you wired them up.
My plan is to get them all wired and done this weekend! I think I'm going to wire them completely independent from all the other lights...and put a switch in for them obviously. I'll post some pics when they are done!:thumbup1:
Hey was thinking on this… first did you do anything ? Second, the switch, if you use a STSP, On-Off-On Switch, you can have one side hooked so the parking lights turns on the Fogs, the other side for manual override if needed and the center Off just to turn the things off. Power can come from two places for the switch, one from the parking lights and the other from a low draw position on the circuit panel. the current draw will be so low that it really won’t matter where you get the power, just mark the wires for future info and make sure to fuse all power wires.
