I've been considering buying a K&N cold air intake for my 1998 4.0 V6 Ranger. Is it worth the money? How much power difference is there? Does it change your exhuast sound?

From what I have learned, the cold air intakes pretty much do nothing. Your stock air box already sucks in cold air already. I honestly don't think they are worth the money. If it were a 20.00 or 30.00 thing, then I would say go for it, but for the price I say it isnt worth it. To me the only benefit is a filter you can clean without replacing it. Also the two threads have been merged, and relocated to after market product category.
Youll get prolly a max of 10 hp (which wouldnt evne be felt) and 1-2mpg. Basically itd take forever for it to pay itself off lol. If your lookin for a good exhaust tone, simply swap out your muffler to somethin like a Thrush Welded. Sounds good, its cheap as hael ($30 for mine) and iv gotten a gain of 3 mpg with mine!
I bought an aFe intake because it was cheaper, I just got it so I haven't put it in yet. I was considering returning it because it didn't come with a replacement intake tubing or heat shield like the k&n does but was looking to save money. I'm not sure how much a replacement tube would make. Anyway it was only 150, I'll keep you posted on how it performs. It's been 90+ degrees here so haven't wanted to be outside.
