what is the difference between sport and off road

What is the main difference between the Ford 4x4 Sport and the Ford 4x4 Off Road in the 2011 Ford Ranger. I know the tire size is quite a bit different. I have a 4 liter engine and the gas mileage is really bad. Would the gears in the rear end make a huge difference?

I know the 4x4 off road packages come with gas tank skid plate and some other skid plates, the sport does not have that. I don't think regearing on stock tires would correct the gas issue. Your best bet is keep up on maintenance, and if you add any performance parts buy a tuner and tune it to give it a bit of a tweak.

I think the biggest gas saving tip would be how you drive it and to watch your speeds

Quantify "really bad".

this.

what are you getting for MPG. will give us a better clue as to what "may" be the issue.

i put may in quotes as there most likely is no issue being its a 2011. Rangers get fullsize truck fuel economy. so it wont be great. driving habit and maintenance are the biggest MPG changers.

Changing tire size can affect the gas milage but did you change the tire size or the gearing ?
Find out what your peak rpm range is for the HP and Torque in your engine or just the suggested driving rpm; see where you are for mph vs your engine rpm. If it isn’t where the factory wants you to be for good hp and torque then you will get less milage than is suggested by the factory but who ever gets the milage the factory says we should.

Winter time and cold weather can also cause a drop in milage, driving in a lower gear raises the rpms and burns more gas and waiting for the truck to warm up costs milage.

The OP doesn't list a location, so I'm going to assume they're Canadian. Rangers of Canada in 2010-2012(I believe) were offered in Sport trim and Off Road trim. Memory is rusty, but I believe the Off Road was essencially an American Sport 4x4 model with Rancho shocks and different seat upholstery. All 4x4 models had tcase and fuel tank skids. All in all, that's the only difference....shocks and fabric.

Like I said, I'm very rusty as I last recalled this info in 2010. I seem to remember a 2010 FX4 Off Road model exclusively for Canadian market. Last year of Fx4 in the state was I believe 2009.
