Update on mine:
I popped my taillights off the other day for some cleaning and discovered I only converted one of the L1224R's with the stock 3157 base! So I busted it out and topped them off with some "tone leveler"...IE painted the bases below the glass that protrudes into the lamp assembly. I did it a long time ago to the back-up bulb holders and the outcome is super clean. No tan/black/grey stuff going on. I used Rust-Oleum Bright Coat...just a single light to medium coat and it dries fast. Might be redundant on a colored lense like the red, but the tones are even and the end product looks alot cleaner than it does un-painted.
I think the look is clean. Might be something to look in to.
End result...
Like I said, a little unneeded in a colored lense.
Reverse bulb holders...
