I have a 93 2.3L 5 speed manual transmission ranger and the tranny makes a whining noise in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th gear. It shifts smooth but the shifter does have a lot of play in it. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to the problem. I just changed the fluid and it did help a little. Thanks in advance :thumbup1:

What did the fluid look like? How much metal was on the fill plug? Most fill and drain plugs are magnetic to pick up any shavings in the oil. If there was alot of metal(could have looked like grease) then it could be a bearing going bad. But my uncles van had a whine in the rear end and it was the side affects of the after market gears in the diff. Also what type of oil did you put back in?
ya there was metal on the magnet and the oil I took out of there was gear oil. I put Mercon in it and the noise seemed to quiet down a little bit, but it is still there.
