all 4x4 rangers 2001 and up - live front axle ( no auto locking hubs ) make sure the large nut on the end of the axle( in the center of the lug nuts ) is torqued up tight ( 150 - 225 ft. lbs. ) it may feel like the wheel bearings may be going if the nut is not properly torqued down.

2008 FX4 4x4 front axle

at 12500 miles, my truck was in the dealers shop for an oil change when the mechanic did some checks while it was up on the rack. He grabbed the front tire, top and bottom, and found some play in what he thought was a worn bearing. the dealer ordered a bearing and housing unit on warranty and installed it the next week. after the oil change, I brought my truck home and checked it myself. I found the center nut loose and tightened it up. it tightened up the wheel bearings to the wheel stub shaft .as there is no cotter pin on the lock nut , it may loosen up in regular driving conditions. it may be a good idea to check torque on all nuts on the wheels periodically.
