    1998 Ranger Project

Bargain You got a good deal. I would run a compression check, you could have a bad valve or two. If compression is good do the check for vacuum leaks.

this may help you all with ur 4wd

Yes, sdowiat, the manual hubs eliminate the guesswork regarding, "Did my hubs engage this time or not?" I bought my '99 a year ago, and that's the first modification I made. I have had numerous 4x4's, and very much prefer manual hubs. If the weather is messy I just leave them locked.

I stand corrected, and Klinger nailed it.

1998 3.0 knocking after turning engine off!!

Dieseling What you are experiencing is dieseling. The combustion chambers are probably just as carboned up as everything else. The carbon effectively raises the compression ratio by occupying space in the chamber, plus, it gets red hot and ignites the mixture. As you have seen, the engine...

    Serpentine belt replacement

There should be a place on the tensioner to stick a 3/8 drive ratchet, unload the tensioner, off with the old and on with the new.

Low fuel pressure on start/ intermittent starting

Yes, it solved the problem. I test ran the truck before reinstalling the bed just to be sure. One word of caution, make sure the gas guage is reading correctly as well, my guage varies from 1/2 to 3/4 tank regardless of actual fuel level, something is keeping the float from making full...

Low fuel pressure on start/ intermittent starting

I experienced the same problem with my '99 4.0, I changed the filter with no improvement. I wasn't sure whether it was pump or regulator, so I replaced the pump- regulator-guage- sender assembly. The easiest way is to lift the bed off.

CL / ebay find: Decent Ranger for someone on a budget

Specs page lists automatic and it is obviously a stick according to the pictures. As long as the dealer lets me take it on a fairly long test drive and thorough examination I would have no quarrel with an "as is" sale. The truck looks very well cared for, a nice buy for someone.

    OMG, House Almost Caught Fire!!

Wow Man, I didn't know a tree limb rubbing through the wire would cause that overvoltage situation. The power company came through during the Summer and cut the trees way back from the lines, I'm glad they did..

You're probably right I probably was a little too harsh, took it too seriously I guess.:)

    She's the new Einstein!

So, what do we have here? So this dorky guy somehow ends up with a beautiful wife, he gets his jollies publicly ridiculing her. The girl tolerates such abuse because of low self esteem, but through the attention generated by the post, a decent guy, who knows a gorgeous hunk of woman when he...

    Occasional hard starting

Thanks, ZRanger. I didn't check for power, got the bed back on now, I assume that the ground comes off the wiring loom somewhere under there, I'll see if I can trace it down. We get a lot of Winter road salt here in Missouri too, so that is a likely concern. I'll let you know what I find...

    Occasional hard starting

I definitely agree with you on the wisdom of trying it out before the bed's on, just in case the pump's faulty. It still seems that you sometimes have to switch the ignition off and on a few times before the pump will prime, don't understand what's up with that: Relay, ign sw., filter. and pump...

    Occasional hard starting

Thanks Yes, thanks, lifting from the center worked great. I got the bed off and pump/regulator/float changed. My wife and son carried one side of the bed and I got the other, just need to recruit him again when he's back home tomorrow to help set it back on. Hopefully that fixes things!

Thanks, any tips on the easiest way to finesse that liner out of there without messing it up.

    Occasional hard starting

Thanks Thanks guys, I probably will lift the bed off. I have a bed liner, I wrestled with it a few days ago to see how hard it was to pop out of there, I'll probably recruit my sons to help me manhandle it and the bed. I found that I also need a larger torx bit than I have in my garage, I will...

    Occasional hard starting

99 Ranger supercab 4.0 auto: Occasionally it is hard to start, turns over fine. I don't hear the pump prime the system the first time I turn the ignition on, so it's off and on a few times til I hear it prime, even then at times it acts like it's not getting sufficient fuel. I replaced the...

    Days I wish I had a Ranger...

Love it! That sounds absolutely fantastic, I used to drive a 66 Comet, 390 12.5 compression, 427 cam etc. about 3 mpg. similar idle. Music to my ears.:)

    Anyone Else Wear Boots?

Red Wing Another vote for Red Wing, shop carefully, half are made in China and poorly made. I have worn the American made Wings for decades, they last me 7-8 years of very rough dirty work. For work I choose the lace up work boots, with a pair of Western style's slip-ons for motorcycle gear...
