    Full-Size Ford Truck Tranny....

From the 60's to the 90's Ford made a 4-speed OD manual transmission that they put in the full sized trucks, vans and 4x's. The original one used a cast iron case, but at some point during the 80's they changed it to an aluminum case. Gear ratios changed slightly when that happened. I always...

(I could use your help) Rough idle...

...is not a new Canadian rock band, but rather how my truck decided it was going to run today. So here's my issue.... I have a 1998 Ford Ranger XL with 2.5L 4-cylinder and 5-speed Manual transmission (see my avatar). Truck starts ok, but idles very rough. Most times, does not run more than a...

    Frequency of tune-ups....

I asked this a while ago but never got an answer. Thinking maybe no one saw it since it in a pretty buried section (or maybe just one that very few ever visit?) Anyway, here's the link --> https://www.rangerforum.com/threads/2-5l-tune-up-q.9772/ Answer it here, answer it there, doesn't matter...

    Fixing upholstery...

Anyone ever use fishing line to repair a torn seam on the seat? One of mine are splitting open. I thought about regular thread, but a seat can go through more stress than you might think, so I thought, maybe something stronger. More durable. I've got about 4000 yards of 2 lb. test. I figure it...

    How fast in which gear?

Anyone ever notice if you've pulled a very high speed in any particular gear? The truck I call "Whitey Ford " has the 2.5L four cylinder engine with the 5 spd manual tranny and 3.45 gears in the rear end. I've pulled 62 mph in 3rd, which is a little over 4300 rpm. The other day, I had to hit it...

    A little anniversary....

Bought my truck on the last day of march in 2012. When I got home today I noticed the odo read 187001 It was just barely shy of 148K when I bought it. Approximately 39K miles in about 6.5 years+. Just a little over 5900/year. Surprisingly little "per year" mileage, considering it seems like I...

    Auto Tranny

Anyone know where my friend can get a replacement for cheap? Apparently, its a hard tranny to find and prices for rebuild and rebuilt are out of his price range. He's not a mechainic or even mechainically inclined, but has friend who are. He doesn't have much money, so he's looking for something...

    Air in Cooling system

Just replaced my radiator and while the engine side of things seems to working just fine, I have no heat and the gauge does not register. Looking for a little enlightenment from the community. See the full story here - http://www.rangerforum.com/threads/no-heat.10388/ Dean

    No heat!

So I've got a 2.5L 4-cylinder in my '98 XL. No AC. Recently noticed a coolant leak emanating from the front of the radiator, so I got another radiator and took the opportunity to replace the (original!) hoses. Everything went pretty smoothly. I did receive the wrong lower hose, but that got...

    Engine Tune up question

Just posting a link here to a question I put in the engine section, since it also falls under this section. Just wondering about Tune up intervals. If you think you can help, please post your answer at the following link - http://www.rangerforum.com/threads/2-5l-tune-up-q.9772/ Thanks...

    2.5L Tune Up Q?

I've got a '98 XL with 2.5L and it will soon pass 15K since the last tune-up (plugs and wires). Back in the good ol' days it was recommended that one get a tune up once a year, but in this modern world of DIS ignition systems, is this still the practice? I know the car makers mention that DIS...

    posting pics

Looks like there's been a few changes since I was here last. I have a thread I started when I first got here and there were some pics posted in it. I linked to it in my sig, so people could see my truck if they wanted to. I see the pics in that thread are gone now. Do I need to edit the entries...

    Smiles per gallon

Just a quick note, cuz I'm absolutely giddy over this. Ok, I once heard about a "trick" for cleaning out an engine that involves pouring ATF into the gas tank. I've done it on my old truck and it seems to work with no harm to the vehicle (although it does leave yellow "hairs" on the spark...

    oil?

Hey guys, So I've had the truck for about 2.5 months and I wanna do and O&F on her, but what do I use? Synth or regular? What weight? How much? 5 quarts? ...guess I'm really asking what does the factory say this thing should live on. Dean P.S. She's gettin' real close to 150k, but purrs...

    Interesting occurrance

Sometimes, when coasting, or coming to a stop, I notice the engine speed does not come down until I come to a complete stop (ALWAYS as soon as the truck comes to a complete stop). The throttle doesn't appear to be sticking and this occurrance seems to be happening less frequently as time goes on...
