    99 losing power in 4th

...when's the last time the truck got a tune-up?...and don't forget fuel and oil filters. Always start with the easiest remedy and work from there, so you've blown out the air filter with air, now onto the next easiest thing.

    Transmission problem

Do you hear any funny noises? (might be faint, listen closely) If all the other gears are just fine and its only one gear, that could point to an extremely worn or broken synchro.

    97 ranger engine swap

Get another tranny with the engine. Anything built to sit behind a 3.0L v6 won't have the beef needed to be reliable behid the v8. ...besides, I don't think it will be a straight swap. Have you considered 4.0L V6? VERY powerful engines and pretty much a dead straight swap out with the 3.0L.

whats the best oil to use in my 2003 ranger

I ran 10W-40 and 10W-30 of various brands in my 1980 VW diesel for years. It was fine. I never used Diesel oil until I went to work at a shop that would allow us to change oil in our own vehicles. That truck had a lifter tick problem that went back to a faulty oil pump design. We ran Delo in...

whats the best oil to use in my 2003 ranger

@ 200K, I might switch to a diesel oil. Delo or Rotella. higher zinc content (not like they used to have, but more than some others) will help save parts a little longer and 15W-40 weight might stop the smoking.....lessen it at least. ...however... Be aware that the smoking is a sign that the...

...AC will work, too. +1 on cleaning the IAC and MASS air flow meter, too. "Throttle Body Cleaner" (formerly "Carb Cleaner") will work nicely.

    Second Ranger....

Pilot bearings are SEALED bearings, so nothing can get inside. I've put hundreds of thousands of miles on pilots and had them last just fine. Don't overthink things....the engineers have already done that.

Replacing the entire axle would be easier than replacing just the boot. When I worked at the muffler shop we found that replacing a drive axle, rather than pulling the joint and replacing just the boot, was a lot quicker and less stressful operation to endeavour.

    94 ranger

Are you saying its suddenly lost a lot of power since you've owned it, or are you just noticing a lack of power in general? ...and Al gave good advice. Always make sure an engine is in a good state of tune FIRST, before attempting some kind of "repair".

Why didn't you just get a new pilot bearing?

    RPM's

Thanks Eddie. Since you failed to tell me, I had to search out the high gear ratio of your transmission. The reason I ask is because there's an easy math formula you can use (with the aid of a simple calculator) to answer your question. What you do is figure out the overall gear ratio...

What size tires are you're running on it right now and what's the OD ratio of the transmission?

Interiors should swap over (minor alteration may be neccessary). I don't think any welding would be required. Here's an overview of the different generations of Ranger and Bronco II ....so tell us about that S-10. Good enough to drive? Dean
