O/D light flashing means that the PCM detected a transmission fault at some point. The harsh shifting is the trans in "failsafe" mode to protect itself until the fault is corrected. Have the truck scanned. The code received should give an idea as to where to start.

Ok. I'm a little rusty here. When you scan the truck, is there more than one option for modules to check? For example, is there a body control module? ABS module? Etc.. Maybe there is an ABS fault, or something similar. I think that truck gets it's vehicle speed from the ABS system. Therefore, if the rear axle speed sensor or, maybe, a wheel speed sensor acts up occasionally it could affect the trans. If there are other module choices when scanning, I would check all of them. If you haven't yet. It sounds to me like it's an ABS or speed sensor issue. I don't recall much of anything else resetting with a key cycle. Hope this helps.

Just a thought. Have you tried replacing the Trans Range sensor? I remember back from my dealership days that you could get some pretty strange symptoms when those things went on the fritz. If you do try to replace that, make very sure its aligned properly. Other than that, I'm at a loss.

No i not sure what that is or where its located, I'm an old Retired Ford Techinican myself, & my specialties were driveability, & heat & cliate controls. This thing has racked my brain, last nite i had a dream that i fixed i it,by replacing front abs sensors .Not sure if it has them beings its a 2 wd

It should have abs sensors in the front regardless if its 2wd. The trans range sensor is on the side of the trans, at the shift linkage. Used to be called the neutral safety switch on the old dumb transmissions. It was called, by Ford, the MLP sensor for a while until the federal govmt came up with the standardized terms. Just keep in mind that it needs to be aligned when installed. It has a line on it that needs to be lined up when the trans is in neutral. Good luck.
