1994 XLT, Missing in idle and in gear

    1994 Ford Ranger XLT 2.3, misses in idle and throughout all gears, will only idle for about 2-4 min before it quits and has to be restarted. Changed both coil packs, spark plugs and wires are new and installed new fuel filter, nothing helped. Can you give me some insight to my problem? Thanks: OEF Vet

    Have you checked your fuel pressure on the rail?

    Have you cleaned your MAF?

    Thanks for your response! I haven't checked pressure but I unplugged the MAF and it made no change whatsoever, will that work with checking the MAF or would it actually just have to be cleaned to tell?

    You need to take it off the truck and actually clean it to notice any difference, just unplugging it isnt going to fix anything. The reason it could be acting odd is that the MAF sensor is dirty.

    Clean that & check your fuel pressure and report back!

    Check for any vaccum leaks. Check that the EGR valve is not all rotted out. It leads right into the intake and could be sucking air.

    Thank you both, there is definitely no vacuum leaks but I will clean the MAF, check fuel pressure and check the EGR valve and get back with ya'll!!!

    Took the MAF sensor off of vehicle and thoroughly cleaned the hot wires and electrical connectors. It did seem to have more HP when I revved it up but it still has a real rough idle and missing. Fuel pressure is fine, no vacuum leaks and EGR valve is ok.

    I know this sounds stupid but did you clean the sensor itself too? I know you said you cleaned the wires and electrical connectors ... lol

    Yes when I mentioned hot wires that meant the 2 small probes that make up the sensor!

    possible it has had a cam installed....?

    No cam installed and I changed out the EGR solenoid today, still missing and loping!

    no cam installed. Took apart the throttle body and cleaned it real well today but still didn't help either! I just thought about this, I had the tank dropped to check the Fuel Pump in Feb because I was on my way to Mississippi for training and when I arrived in Hamilton, Al the truck quit on me at a red light, they found that one of the electrical connectors on the pump had came unplugged, so they just plugged it back in and it ran perfectly then. The next time I went to fuel my truck up on the way to South Ms I noticed they had done something wrong when they replaced either the Fuel tank or the Fuel Filler tube because the Gas nozzle would shut off every couple of seconds if you didn't just stand there and barely trickle fuel into the filler tube, it takes about ten min to fill the truck up so I'm wandering if something else could have went wrong with the filler tube later on and could cause my missing problem? I did two weeks training while in Ms and wasn't allowed to drive my truck so it set there for two weeks without being drove, I craked it one time in between to keep my battery charged so I also wander if you think that could have anything to do with it. The day I left Ms headed back home I had driven it about 100 miles before it started missing on me, I pulled over and realized the #1 sparkplug was arcing fire between it and the front coil pack so I drove to Tuscaloosa Al and purchased a new coil pack and replaced it and it did away with the arcing but it was still missing. Sorry for the book but I'm tired and at my wits end with this Ranger!!!
