Hey everyone. I own a 1989 Ford Ranger XLT 4x2 2.9L V6 5 speed stick. I was wondering if you guys know anything about performance aftermarket chips designed to increase horsepower and fuel economy. I don't know anything about them, and the ads just put up numbers that look too good to be true. Could you guys tell me a bit about them? Would you recommend them? Thanks.

Chips sometimes are a waste of money. I know most members would recommend a tuner. They are a little pricey, but that will enhance the performance of your vehicle if you can find one for your truck. The best thing to do to maximize the trucks performance is keep it running well such as tune ups, filter changes etc. Also tire inflation and cleaning certain things like throttles, IAC's. Some companies like to advertise tons of gains from chips, just like the throttle body spacers when they pretty much do nothing.

chips are a waste of money. if you get one you will see no gain in anything. spend the extra money and get a tuner, its worth it.

What exactly is a tuner and how much do they cost?

A tuner allows you to basically calibrate your engine to any modifications or even to standard ford specs to allow maximun performance of the engine. They are also used as code readers for any check engine light issues. Take a look at sct.com, they sell tuners and have info on them and they are one of the best. But, they run about 480.00, I know of a guy that sells them, of you buy from him he sends the tunes to you to download for free only if you buy the tuner from him though
