i got a 2003 ford ranger a couple days ago. and i can tell you this.... it is probably the best truck ive ever driven. I was driving a 1993 plymoth voyager, so anything was a step up. but the ranger offers me off-roading capabilities with good fuel economy. i am officially a Ford man

New Ranger owner has question about whining/hum noise Hi, Just bought my first Ranger today. A 2006 2WD XLT Automatic 5speed. Has under 19 K miles. Looks spanking brand new; not a scratch or dent and beautifully detailed. However.( ! ), I notice a high pitched whine or hum at hiway speed which disappears when I take foot off accelerator. At first I thought it was tire tread noise until I let it 'coast' a bit. (Noise disappears when coasting, returns when I put foot back on the gas). Seeking advice and ideas as to what to look for? Does not seem to be on only one side, either front or back...just "underneath somewhere". Am I just being picky, or is this sort of noise normal for this vehicle?
you know i have heard about that, and from what i understand it is actually cause by the air system coming in the cabin, do u have the vent/heat on when u hear that noise?
Moranger, I had a couple of mechanics go on test rides with me and they agreed that it is the ring and pinion in the rear end. Not dangerous, or critical, but annoying from a noise standpoint ( I prefer quiet vehicles). Therefore, since I still have a few months left on the original warranty, I am having a new ring and pinion put in next week. Thanks for your response and input! Cheers! Selwoc
