I have an 89 Ranger 4x4 with the m5od trans. Over the past year, it has gotten a rattle/chatter that has become progressively louder. Only happens with the clutch out in neutral. If I push the clutch in, it stops. Also only happens after the truck is warmed up. Any ideas? The previous owner said he put a new clutch in it at about 120,000 miles, has 173,000 on it now. Clutch doesn't slip. I'm thinking it's either the pilot bearing or some bearing in the transmission.

Had the same problem turned out to be the little springs in the clutch dish had lost their tension. A little late with the reply haven't cruised through this forum for awhile. Probably help someone else who may hear a similar noise if the clutch don't slip don't worry about it. Clutch disk takes a lot of work to change it out.
