I let my rwd drive hang on leaf springs while changing both shocks.

I let my rwd drive shaft hang on by the leaf springs while changing both shocks at the same time. I put a jack under the differential and jacked it up about quarter of an inch and hear a loud ping sound come from somewhere.
What did I break? I don't see anything obvious. Should I continue putting everything back together and see what happens? Any input would be appreciated.
