97' Ford Ranger XLT supercab 2.3l, 5 speed with overdrive manual transmission. It'll make noise during shifting at times it makes a high pitch whine from the tail end of the transmission and clunks when taking off. Looking for input. Ask questions if you need to know more.

You may be due for a tranny rebuild. If it's 2 wheel drive, if 4 wheel drive check transfer case first. On my 4.0l i think the tranny wore out enough that even after a rebuild there is enough wear in the gears for it to go clunk on take off. It's most noticiable when taking off uphill. Although yours being only a 2.3l I can't see the tranny needing a rebuild as long as fluids were maintained. Check your driveshaft U-joints also, if dry they could start squeaking, then get play and go clunk.
