Put a new head gasket in my 88 2.3L 4x4 (it was blown out between #2/3). Everything else was in good working order- fuel, ignition, charging, etc. systems. It started right up, holds a good smooth idle but will not accelerate when the gas pedal is pushed. It sounds like it speeds up a little and tries to advance but won't take off more than 500 rpm. Any advice on I what I might have screwed up would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Mike.

I had this same issue my resolution was replacing the spring connecting the lifter rods on the carbeurator as it wasnt allowing it to add enough fuel with the amount of air it was sucking and would ass out unless I revved up realllll high.

Once I replaced the missing spring and gave the arm a little tug to set it at a level I liked so I could get a better response when I stepped on it all has been well.
