    I have a 1990 ranger 4.0 automatic

When I start it up it runs very rough and conks out if I do not step on accelerator to keep idle up. Also it smells like it is running rich

The top portion of the plastic air cleaner housing is broken and does not seal properly

I see signs of sooting on inlet of the metal houseing where the idle position sensor is located

I do not have a ob tester.
I would like to find some information on jumping out terminals (which two to jump ) on computor plug to read engine light flashes and a list of code definitions.

Also any general info on what might be the cause of this problem would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks Beatnick:(

    Take it to auto zone

If you take it to auto zone or advance auto they will read your codes and give you a printed copy . it's free.
