Just me but if there is a burnt smell and you are going nowhere in D then I would start the search for another. Is there a pro shop for auto trans rebuilds in your area. Wouldn't hurt to check them out, the cost of a rebuilt on your tranny just might be in the same price as a JY Unit and the...

will 98 Ford Ranger parts fit on a 88 Ford Ranger

What parts are you talking about ? What are you thinking ? You might find the engine, trans, t/c might go in but electronics are different so may not operate correctly and the bed may swap if the same type of truck but the Cab body panels are different.

93 Auto transmission works in 2nd n and reverse, not in the others..

Sounds like slippage inside the old trans. Try the oil/filter change thing, if no go, try either a pro-flush at a good reliable shop or a new trans. I was just thinking on it and remembered I had a '98, trans went, only forward gears, got a trans from the JY, never had another problem.

    Howdy All

Maybe sitting so long caused some of the innerspring to dry up. It would be far easier to do an oil/filter change, even a couple of time and see. Maybe after you do the oil change, have a friend give the little truck a push and see if the trans will catch up. Luck is always good to have on your...

    Trans. & transfer case swap

I guess I missed something ! You asked if both differentials needed to be the same. My response was yes they do but I am always a little more wordy than that. If you don't want people responding or if you want specific people responding put it in the OP. Sorry to have bothered you with an...

    Trans. & transfer case swap

Both the front and the rear differentials will need to be the same gear ratio. Check out what gear ratio the two truck have and if the same change away. If not you will need to swap both diffs.

    Dallas/FtWorth?

Well not from TX and the long bed will do you no good, won't bolt up to the short bed mounting points. Welcome. '97 was a great year for the ranger, easier to lift, easier to out in a V8... Plenty of mods to do.

    Mounting tools to inside bedside.

You can use a block of whatever you want to space out to even things out... wood, aluminum, whatever. You need to reach up from underneath to attach, some thru bolts and nuts to keep things tight then mount the specialty mounts. Just thinking here nothing else.

    Tranny question

My first guess would be the transmission mount is either bad or not there.
